Traffic accidents continue to be a killer in the Villages and across Florida, according to new law enforcement data.
Nearly 1,800 people have been killed in crashes so far this year, preliminary data compiled by Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles show. Another 128,000 people have been injured in collisions across the Sunshine State.
The crash fatalities and injury numbers appear to be on track to be slightly down from last year when more than 3,700 people were killed in accidents and nearly 253,000 were killed. The 2022 data is as of July 15.
Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles also tracks certain types of accidents. Here are the current tallies for 2022.
- Hit and run: 110,000 accidents and 312 fatalities.
- Pedestrian: 9,500 accidents and 847 fatalities.
- Motorcycle: 8,600 accidents and 593 fatalities.
- Bicycle: 6,400 accidents and 186 fatalities.
Florida, like other states, often sees a spike in traffic accidents in summer months when younger and more inexperienced drivers hit the road in droves. That is not to mention the influx of tourists.
“During this busy summer season, remember to make sure your vehicle is maintained and allow yourself time to arrive at your destination safely,” Colonel Gene S. Spaulding, Director of the Florida Highway Patrol, said in an announcement about cops cracking down on unsafe driving. “FHP Troopers will be patrolling the roadways across the state in an effort to prevent reckless driving behavior and ensure drivers are obeying all traffic laws.”
How to Get Compensation After an Accident
The latest data is an unfortunate reminder of the life-altering and even deadly impact that can come when accidents happen.
Even the more routine crashes can have serious consequences. They often cause a wide range of injuries that can limit people’s ability to earn a living and enjoy daily activities. That is not to mention the damage done to cars and the costs that come with getting vehicles fixed or replaced.
The good news is that anyone injured in an accident in Florida has the right to seek compensation from those responsible. To do so, you have to be able to identify the person or entity legally liable for the collision and prove that they are to blame.
A seasoned accident lawyer can provide vital assistance. A lawyer will investigate the crash to identify and locate negligent drivers and others responsible for the crash. A lawyer can also help you pursue compensation, often without a long and complicated court battle.
