There’s nothing quite like hopping in a golf cart and cruising around under the Florida sunshine. For one St. Louis man, however, a recent jaunt on four wheels ended in arrest after cops chased him through a Florida Keys neighborhood.
Parks Terry was charged with a number of criminal offenses in January stemming from an alleged drunk golf carting incident. Local police found the Missouri native passed out in a golf cart outside of a Monroe County beach resort early one morning. When they woke Parks up and asked him to get out of the vehicle, he took off instead, according to local news radio.
Terry proceeded to lead local cops on a low speed chase through a nearby neighborhood. Although he gave police officers a “thumbs up” sign early in the pursuit, he reportedly later switched to the middle finger and began yelling obscenities.
Terry eventually made it to his mother’s home, where he and his mom refused to allow the cops to come in. Terry also wrestled a paramedic to the ground after the medical professional entered the home through a side door, the Miami Herald reports.
Officers ultimately made it inside the home, where it took four cops and a Taser gun to get Terry in cuffs. They later said the 32 year old began growling like a dog and rubbing his face in broken glass on the floor following his arrest.
Terry was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer or first responder, fleeing and eluding police, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, and driving under the influence.
Golf Cart Safety
Terry’s brush with the law was nothing if not colorful, but getting behind the wheel of a golf cart—or any other vehicle—is no laughing matter. Drunk driving is a leading cause of accidents across the country. Golf carting while under the influence of alcohol or drugs not only risks the safety of everyone inside the vehicle, but also people on roadways nearby.
There are a number of important safety precautions that every golf carter driver should take. That includes wearing a seat belt at all times, maintaining reasonable speeds and avoiding sharp turns.
