Jet skis are a fun option for adventure seekers looking to hit the water. That is especially true in Florida, where warm weather makes enjoying the open water possible almost all year around. Still, the allure of catching some waves on a motorized water craft also comes with some safety hazards, as a recent accident near Jacksonville shows.
A Florida man was sent to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a recent accident in the St. Augustine Inlet, the Associated Press reports. Two other people were also injured in the mishap, St. Johns County Fire Rescue officials told the AP.
It is not entirely clear how the accident happened. Several news outlets reported that the primary victim was unconscious and had gone into cardiac arrest when Fire Rescue officers arrived on the scene, near St. Augustine. Although his injuries were described as severe, the man also had a stroke of luck: boaters nearby assisted the man and called 911 when they noticed the accident scene.
A “Good Samaritan in a pontoon boat rescued one victim who was unconscious and in cardiac arrest in the water,” according to Jacksonville.com. “They performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him while ferrying him to shore where St. Johns Fire Rescue first responders took over.”
Paramedics were able to get the victim to breathe and sent him in critical condition to Orange Park Medical Center. Another person involved in the accident was taken to the hospital with injuries that were described as not life threatening. The third was treated and released.
Legal Rights for People Injured in Jet Ski Crashes
The St. Augustine accident is another reminder of the safety hazards that can come with getting on a jet ski.
Even the most experienced and responsible riders can be involved in a crash. Poor weather conditions, the negligence of others on the water and malfunctioning parts and equipment are some of the most common factors.
The good news is that a person injured in a jet ski crash can seek compensation from those responsible. The money damages typically available in these cases include compensation for medical bills, property damage and missed wages due to time away from work. A seasoned personal injury lawyer can help you understand your rights and options and pursue compensation.
