A local man was recently involved in a fatal accident with a motorcyclist in Hernando County, the latest tragic reminder of the risks that come with traveling by two wheels.
The 67-year-old Webster man was leaving a solid waste station in Dade City when the accident occurred, according to Villages-News. The vehicle reportedly turned into the path of a Yamaha motorcycle, killing the 56-year-old Hernando County man on the bike.
The Webster man was not injured in the crash. It is not clear if he was ticketed for his role in the accident or whether the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet.
These kinds of collisions are all too common in the Villages and across Florida. They can be especially catastrophic when bikers do not take a simple safety precaution: wearing a helmet.
Last year, for example, a motorcyclist was injured after a Tesla drifted into his lane and struck him on County Road 466 near the intersection with Rolling Acres Road. The biker, who was wearing a helmet at the time, was fortunate to escape without life-threatening injuries.
Two other local motorcyclists were not nearly as lucky when their bikes collided just months later. One rider was killed, and the other suffered serious injuries in the crash, which happened on SE 100th Avenue in Belleview, Villages-News reports.
Neither man was wearing a helmet when the crash happened. Both bikes reportedly were overturned in the collision, and the man who died was thrown from his motorcycle.
Nearly 330 people have been killed in more than 5,000 motorcycle accidents across the state already this year, according to data from Florida Highway Safety Motor Vehicles. A total of nine people have died in 221 motorcycle crashes in Lake, Sumter, and Marion counties.
Suing for Wrongful Deaths Caused by Fatal Motorcycle Crashes
When a person is killed in a motorcycle crash or other traffic accident in Florida, his or her loved ones have the right to seek compensation from those responsible for the crash. That often includes other drivers, their insurers and sometimes their employers
The compensation typically available in these cases includes money for the loss of the deceased person’s earnings and companionship, as well as for mental anguish and suffering, medical, and funeral expenses.
There is no amount of money that can ever undo a fatal car accident or replace a loved one killed in a crash. Compensation can, however, help ease some of the financial burden that often comes with losing a family member.
