A string of recent DUI incidents is yet another reminder of the perils of drinking and driving and the danger it poses to everyone on the road.
Two women were arrested and charged with driving under the influence in The Villages in a span of three days, while a man separately was sentenced for his role in a DUI crash. A fourth person was busted by cops later this month for driving after losing her license because of previous DUI convictions.
The first incident occurred after Lady Lake police received a report of erratic driving by a truck with a trailer pulling two cars, according to a Villages-News report. The 37-year-old woman behind the wheel refused to pull over when directed by police officers and initially declined to get out of the vehicle after running it off the road. When she did exit the truck, officers said she was visibly intoxicated.
The officers reportedly tasered a 34-year-old male passenger after he refused to cooperate with them. “He became ‘hostile’ with police and began using slurs toward them,” Villages-News reports. “It required four officers to get him into a restraint device.”
The driver was charged with DUI and child neglect (two juveniles in the vehicle had access to open beers, according to the cops). The passenger was charged with resisting arrest and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Days later, a 20-year-old Summerfield woman was arrested and charged with DUI stemming from a March accident in Ocala. Cops said she was driving with a newborn baby and a two-year-old child in her car when the vehicle jumped a median and crashed into two other cars. Tests later showed that her blood alcohol volume was 0.265%, more than three times the legal limit.
Then there is the 34-year-old Villager who was busted for crashing his sport utility vehicle in a drunken crash and fleeing the scene on foot. The man was convicted this month on charges stemming from the single-car crash, which occurred in May. He lost his license for six months, was placed on probation for a year, and was ordered to perform 80 hours of community service.
Finally, a 50-year-old Village of Silver Lake woman, toward the end of the month, was nabbed by police at the wheel of a vehicle despite the fact that her license was suspended.
The woman “had multiple suspensions and revocations of her driver’s license,” Villages-News reports. “She has had at least two DUI arrests. She was also arrested in 2020 when she was found with a bag of crack cocaine tucked in her sock.”
