Hours after a Villages man found out that he won a new golf cart in a promotional giveaway, the vehicle was wrecked, two people were injured and his wife was in handcuffs on a DUI charge.
The woman, a 59-year-old Villages resident, was recently sentenced on the drunk driving charge after pleading no contest, the Villages-News reports. She will lose her driving privileges for six months, be forced to perform 50 hours of community service and serve probation for a year, according to the news outlet.
The arrest stemmed from a single-vehicle accident in December in which the Fuzzy’s Vodka promotional golf cart struck a curb and rolled over on its side. One passenger was sent to Ocala Regional Medical Center with injuries and another sought treatment at a local emergency room, Villages-News reports.
The crash reportedly came just hours after a Fuzzy’s Vodka representative showed up at the woman’s house and surprised her husband with the news that he won the golf cart in a promotional drawing of some 11,000 entrants.
Local cops say the woman admitted drinking four vodkas before getting behind the wheel, according to Villages-News. She staggered when police arrived on the scene, was unable to complete a field sobriety test and had a .203 blood alcohol content, more than twice the legal limit for drivers.
The accident is yet another reminder of the serious risk that comes with getting behind the wheel of a golf cart while intoxicated.
A person who drives a golf cart while drunk faces the same DUI charges imposed on car, truck and other drivers who operate vehicles while under the influence. They are also likely to be responsible for any injuries that they cause as a result.
Anyone who is injured in an accident involving a drunk golf cart driver has the right to seek compensation for medical bills, property damage and other impacts of the crash. A seasoned attorney can evaluate your case, help you understand your rights and options and seek the maximum compensation for your injuries.
